From the formity of the troops, the cadence left-right-left-right. From the drill sergeant’s booming voice, always yelling, showing no sympathy. From waking up before the crack of dawn to go running in the cold to fighting for our country in combat. Then afterwards they go live their lives, some become engineers or nurses, and some become teachers. This is the duty a soldier knows all too well, but what recognition do they get for the brave work they do?
Veterans Day offers a reminder to say “thank you” for their commitment to protecting our freedoms and way of life. Every year on November 11th, Americans pause to honor the sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day, originally established as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I, has evolved into a nationwide tribute to all who have worn the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force, and the National Guard.
At Herrin High School, this day is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and recognition of the dedication and bravery of our community’s veterans. Within the halls of our own school, we are fortunate to have veterans who continue to serve the community as dedicated staff members. Their experiences bring valuable perspectives to the classroom and school environment. We express our deepest gratitude to the following staff members who served our nation in uniform: Spanish teacher Mrs. Estes, who served in the Army; Computer Technician Mr. Wrolson, who was in the Air Force; and Hall Monitor Mr. Wieland, who served in the Army.
This Veterans Day, let us remember that the legacy of service lives on, not just in history books, but in our classrooms, our neighborhoods, and our shared future.
