Nerves are high as a new season of tiger volleyball has arrived. On Monday, August 25, the girls’ volleyball team kicked off their season at their first game against Christ Our Rock Lutheran. After a 2-1 victory for the team, the Lady Tigers feel optimistic and ready for any battle.
Starting some of their practices at the early hour of 6:00 am, the Tigers are dedicated and ready to outwork any opponent standing in front of them. The team is led by Varsity Coach Jessica Whitehead, JV Coach Sydney Stuck, and Freshman Coach Brianna Reese.
The coaches are set on producing the best of the best, on and off the court. Laying down a firm foundation of strong champion-minded athletes, Coach Whitehead has her players reflect and visualize the games ahead; she shares inspirational quotes with athletes constantly.
Team chemistry is a major factor with our Herrin Lady Tigers, as they believe it will contribute to them attaining their first win of the season. Speaking with senior Addison Stinson, she states, “Us having a bond and having that chemistry really changes the way everyone plays. Nobody feels judged or scared to make mistakes; everyone bonds together.”
Every level of volleyball, Varsity, JV, and Freshman, all feel like family. “You go from a very long day at school to hanging out with friends, and getting to play the sport you love,” said Senior Harley Summers.
Furthermore, the Lady Tigers feel even more confident after starting their season off on a great note. As Coach Jessica Whitehead tells her players, “Don’t be the gazelle, be the tiger.” She pushes them to be the biggest in the jungle, and have that mindset of a true tiger.
The next home volleyball game is on Tuesday, September 2, against West Frankfort.
