The Scholar Bowl season came to a close last Tuesday for the varsity team with a tournament at the SIU student center. The team played five matches that day and they won three of them. Sadly the team did not advance but they did still do well at the tournament.
I interviewed the team’s coach Mr.Howard and he was more than happy to provide answers to our questions. When I asked him how he felt about his team’s overall performance this season he had this to say: “I think we’ve done alright, we were a late-blooming team and we didn’t get good until the last half of the season.” Despite this, he said that he is still happy with how his team did although he does believe that there is room for improvement.
He also wanted to say “Although we did good, we need to improve on our American history and our art questions.” Overall, the team did very well throughout the entire season managing to get more wins than they did losses throughout the entire season.
Coach Howard had a piece of advice for anyone either in Scholar Bowl currently or hoping to join shortly; “Some people think that you have to be good at everything to be in Scholar Bowl but in reality, you just need to be good at one thing to be on the team.” He did also say though that a jack of all trades is always appreciated but you will typically only have one of those on a team. So feel free to join Scholar Bowl next year if you have ever thought about doing so before. With that being said, we wish the scholar bowl team the best of luck on their games next season!
