Groundhog Day has been around since the late 1800s. It all started as a pagan celebration called Imbolc. Imbloc is midway between the spring equinox and winter solstice.

Many believed that Punxsutawney Phil would predict the weather for the next six weeks. If Phil saw his shadow after he woke up from hibernation, we would have a longer winter. However, if Phil did not see his shadow, we would have an early spring. This year, 2024, Phil did not see his shadow. This means, according to Phil, that spring will arrive early this year. (Yay!)

Hypothetically, Phil is 138 years old. Groundhogs generally only live up to 6 years old. There are rumors that Phil is fed a “magic elixir” to keep him from aging. Because of this, many say that he will be immortal.

Although Punxsutawney Phil makes predictions about the weather every year, he is only accurate about 39% of the time. He has predicted 107 long-lasting winters and only 21 early springs.

Groundhog Day, was almost actually Badger Day. When looking into this holiday all those years ago, they claimed that badgers were too hard to come by. Groundhogs were more common among the people and the state.

Punxsutawney Phil has met quite a few celebrities in his day. Of course, many people watch Phil and wait for their weather predictions, but some are more famous than others. One was President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Phil was also on Oprah Winfrey Show and Regis Philbin Live in 2001.

Groundhog Day was censored during WWII, this was because we did not want Germany or Japan to know anything about us. At that time, everything was so strict that the weather announced was kept to as simple as simple gets. Because Groundhog Day was related to the weather, they kept it on the down low, not making it a big thing at all.

The movie Groundhog Day, made the holiday’s popularity explode. The movie came out in February 1993 and soon made the actual holiday way more popular than before. Many people got more interested in the holiday and started to celebrate with Phil and all the other people at the time.

Punxsutawney Phil is named after King Philip, we just don’t know which one. They named him after the King to honor him in a sense. Your guess is as good as anyone else’s.
