On Saturday, December 2nd, the HHS Student Government met at the Marion Walmart at 9 A.M.  They went with the aim of buying gifts for Northside and High School students who requested holiday assistance.

Miss Bonnifield, one of the Student Government’s sponsors, said that the Student Government “members enjoy shopping for the students and spreading a little Christmas cheer.  We usually have about 30 students attend our shopping event.”  She also said the Student Government bought presents for both needs and wants to give to those who are in need.  But all of Ms. Bonnifield’s hard work wouldn’t be as successful as it is without the hard work of her Student Government members.

The heart and soul of a community is its children, and HHS boasts a set of four well-suited Student Government Presidents, each of which represents their own class.  They are the ones who bought the presents for their communities.

Josie Brandon, the Freshman Student Government President, told the Tiger Tattler that she has chosen to take part because her “mom worked at North Side and we always went Christmas shopping.  It reflects back to my community.”  Cooper Christ (10) said that it “helps to be reminded that I need to help those in need.”  Maddox Billingsly, the Junior Student Government President, said he enjoys seeing kids receive the gifts they need.  Konnor Doughty, the Senior Student Government President, advised his peers to “Be vocal.  Speak up against something you see wrong.”

Overall, the event was a wonderful experience for Herrin High’s Student Government members.  The event is an undeniable reminder of the importance of giving back to our community.  Life in a small town demands neighbors help each other.  No one can sit idly by while their neighbor suffers in the holiday season—a season in which no one should be alone.

Anyone can find themselves in such circumstances and it is the community’s duty to act as a safety net when a friend in need falls.  But as long as organizations like the HHS Student Government act in their current capacity, working hard to make sure that everyone experiences happy holidays, our community is safe.
