This past Saturday, the town of Herrin came together for a full day of fun, food, and fall festivities during the annual Car Show and Fall Fest. From early in the morning until well after dark, the community filled the park and football field with laughter, music, and the scent of autumn air.
The day kicked off at 9 a.m. with the Car Show in the park. Rows of classic cars, trucks, and custom builds gleamed in the sunlight as visitors wandered through, chatting with proud owners and snapping photos. Car lovers of all ages admired the craftsmanship and nostalgia on display. By the time the show wrapped up at 3 p.m., it was clear the event had once again brought out a strong sense of community pride.
But beyond the chrome and engines, the Car Show had a deeper purpose. Each year, funds raised from the event go toward a special scholarship awarded to a Herrin High School senior. This scholarship was established in memory of Keith Purcell, the late husband of Brenda Purcell. This helps support a student’s future if they’re going into school to be a mechanic. Knowing their support directly helps shape someone’s future made the day even more meaningful for many attendees. Brenda said that “ the first year we got $1,000 and we are hoping to get $5,000 or more.”
As the sun dipped lower, the energy shifted from the park to the school’s football field, where the first annual Herrin Unit 4 Fall Festival began at 6 p.m. Families and students gathered for an evening packed with fun activities and fellowship. A hay ride gave some kids a ride around the football field, while other kids raced between inflatable bounce houses and slides. Nearby, the smell of sweet cotton candy filled the air, and lines formed quickly at the icy stand. All of the students who were interviewed throughout this event said that “they all enjoyed the event and made a great event.”
“Moore Than Coffee,” a local favorite, had a setup near the side entrance, offering warm drinks to keep hands toasty as the temperature dropped. The highlight of the night came when a family movie lit up the giant screen, bringing everyone together on blankets and lawn chairs under the stars for the showing of Monsters.
As the night cooled, a bonfire crackled at the edge of the field, where friends and families gathered to warm up, share stories, and enjoy the peaceful end to a busy day.
The Car Show and Fall Fest was more than just a Saturday full of entertainment; it was a reminder of what makes this community special. From supporting students’ futures to creating memories that will last long after the last car drives off, it was truly a day to remember.
