If there’s one restaurant that has become a Herrin favorite, Sergio’s is a top contender. Sergio’s Mexican Restaurant has been a local staple for many years now, with locations in Herrin, Carbondale, and Murphysboro. Sergio’s has been a long-time favorite for everyone throughout Southern Illinois due to their hospitable service and homemade food.
Sergio’s is owned and operated by the Mendez family, who are constantly helping the local community and the high school. During the major snowstorms in January of last year, the Mendez family offered free meals for anyone who needed them while the power was out almost everywhere. They also have catered at Herrin High School’s International Night and provide food for the Zero Hero celebration every year.
A staple menu item for students is Papa’s special, which is rice served with grilled chicken and topped with cheese sauce. Sergio’s also has some of the best chips and queso you will find in any local restaurant.

Sergio’s can be found at 1400 S 16th St, in Herrin, 1160 E Main St, in Carbondale, and 550 East Industrial Park Road, Bay, in Murphysboro. Carmen’s Cafe can be found at 1401 South Park Avenue in Herrin. Sergio’s Restaurant and Carmen’s Cafe are open every day and are always happy to serve new customers.
