Herrin High School is always looking for ways to recognize and showcase good behavior. Starting last year, the Student of the Month award was introduced as a way to accomplish this.
The award of Student of the Month provides HHS with the opportunity to reward outstanding students throughout the school year. Each month, a different trait will be introduced and new students will be chosen for this incredible achievement.
For September, the highlighted trait is integrity. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Students Veronica Wilson (9), Nolen Frost (10), Braden Davis (11), and Aubrey Rash (12) were chosen as this months recipients that exhibit integrity.
Veronica Wilson is a freshman this year. She is involved in Drama Club and Book and Cinema Club. After high school, Veronica aspires to become an author. She defines integrity as the ability to “always try your hardest and give your best.”
Sophomore Nolen Frost is involved in Spanish Club, Math Team, Scholar Bowl, FBLA, and FCA. He also participates in both Cross Country and Track. Nolen says that integrity is a trait that involves commitment, “If you say you’re going to do something, follow through with it.” After high school, he plans to go to college and become an engineer.
Braden Davis is a junior this year. He is involved in FCA, Tigers 4 Life, P7, Student Government, Rotary, FBLA, Math Team, Best Buddies, and Journalism. He runs Track and Cross Country as well. After high school, Braden plans to attend an out-of-state university for undergrad and go to law school after that. He defines integrity as “the ability to admit the truth, even when it’s tough, and show that you’re honest and trustworthy.”
Senior Aubrey Rash is involved in Journalism and Book and Cinema Club. She defines integrity as “being honest but staying true to yourself. The ability to not let anyone change who you are or guide you to poor decisions.” After high school, Aubrey plans on going to college and pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
Integrity is a trait that all should strive to have and show in their everyday lives. It involves the ability to be honest, reliable, loyal, standing up for what is right, and admitting your mistakes. It’s just like Dennis Waitley said, “A life lived with integrity is a shining star in whose light others may follow in the years to come.”
