Tiger Tea Tuesday #3
Changes at HHS
November 1st started new opportunities for students at HHS. The new flex advisory scheduling gives students, who may be struggling with their classes, some extra help and rewards the ones who are excelling. Teachers can request to see their failing students and give them the one-on-one time they may need. Students who are passing have opportunities such as participating in Mr. Lewis’ jazz or rock band. Around 60% of the students who participated in our survey like the new change, and around 57% of them say that they are getting the extra help they need. Some wish the spots to pick weren’t limited, because it is making it “harder to get help” once the spots fill up. One student says, “I’m half and half about how I feel about this schedule.” Another student talked about how, since they didn’t score super high on map testing, they are being forced to go to an English class but they really need help with the classes they are currently failing.
Personally, my advisory time hasn’t changed because I don’t need the extra help, and I was excluded from map testing as a senior. I think that this time is a really good idea for the kids who need it. Obviously, it is a new system in the school so there will be some bugs to work out; however, I am confident that our staff will perfect it. I hope that in the future the school finds more activities to reward students with, but for now everyone appreciates what is being offered!
