What’s one way to make a great season even better? By winning conference, of course. On February ninth, the Herrin Tigers basketball team did just that. Not only did they go undefeated in conference play, but it was the first time in 46 years that they have won conference.

The Tigers were at home against West Frankfort, a team they have beaten three other times this season, two of those wins coming in tournaments. Like almost every other game with these two teams this season, it was a close one throughout the entire game. The quarters passed by, and with each quarter, the score got closer and closer. It all came down to the final quarter, and with a few fouls to help them out in the end, the Tigers beat the Redbirds 52-46, and clinched the conference.

But there was still another conference game left. Herrin had to go down to Massac County to play the Patriots who they had beaten fairly easily the last time they had played. But this was a different game. The Patriots played great defense against Herrin, a surprise to the Tigers for sure. But it was not enough to hold off the dominant Tiger offense. Herrin would win the game by a score of 55-50, and would finish with an undefeated record in conference.

But the season isn’t over yet. The Tigers have one game left at home against Carterville, and they are looking to finish with a 24-4 record.

Seniors Hayden Holloway and Drew Ringel have been key players to the Tigers success this season. Both have led a game or two in scoring this season, and both have played well on defense. They had some comments on the season, and on what they want for their senior night.

“I think it’s been a pretty good season. I think we really came together as a team,” said Holloway.

“This season has been a blast and I wouldn’t want any other teammates or coaches to do it with,” commented Ringel.

Next, they were asked what was different about this team than teams in the past. “As a team, I think we are more connected,” said Holloway. “We like playing together and just having fun.”

“I think  what has been different about this year is that we have been winning,” said Ringel. “We won the conference… something that hasn’t been done in 46 years, plus we went undefeated in the conference.”

Finally, they were asked about what they want to experience on their senior night. “ Just playing with all my teammates one last time in front of the fans,” Holloway said. Ringel had a big request for the fans. “I would like our crowd to be very into the game and loud so we can feed off their energy,” Ringel said.

The Tigers look to cap off their incredible season on Friday at home against Carterville. It’s the last home game, which mean senior night. It’s going to be a big game, and a formiddable opponent to end the season with.
